Choose between live one-to-one critiques via Skype (broadband connection required), or recorded full HD video critiques sent to your inbox. In these 30 minute/1 hour sessions, Paul will draw on top of your work, suggesting corrections for any issues you may have, such as structure, likeness, exaggeration, values or thumbnail sketching.

Lesson One: Shapes and Conflict
Paul discusses the principles of exaggeration, what shapes to look for and why. You'll explore how shape, likeness and exaggeration changes with your point of view. We'll also look at the benefits of using thumbnail sketches. (Video duration: 1:27:14)
Assignment 1: Draw 'Jules' from three different perspectives: face-on, profile and three-quarter. Show thumbnail sketches and share as much information on your thought process as possible. (Estimated time for completion after tutorial: 2+ hours.)
Lesson 2: Reference
Paul discusses the importance of searching for good reference. He'll teach you how to search for, and use, photos of Bill Gates as an example and research his likeness to aid a final sketch. (Video duration: 1:01:25)
Assignment 2: Find reference of Queen Latifa, make a shortlist of the best ones, the choose one as your main reference to work from. Use YouTube, Wikipedia and other sources to get a feel for her personality to aid your reference search. Make thumbnails and a finished pencil sketch. (Estimated time for completion after tutorial: 3+ hours)
Lesson 3: Value Sketching
Paul takes you through a demonstration showing how to use a large brush to create a grayscale 'value' sketch, finding the bigger shapes and ignoring detail. (Video duration: 58:28)
Assignment 3: Using Photoshop (or equivalent), paint three views of either Jules, Ravinder or Trevor, choosing one perspective for each. Use only one brush, keeping it as big as possible for as long as possible, blocking in the larger areas of value. (Estimated time for completion after tutorial: 2+ hours.)
Lesson 4: Light and Shadow
Using basic objects, Paul deconstructs a simple lighting scene and the anatomy of the shadows, looking at how light behaves in various conditions and on different surfaces. (Video duration: 1:09:47)
Assignment 4: Choose an object from your home and photograph it. Identify all the elements of light and shadow, direct light, cast shadow, reflected light etc. Paint a value sketch study of it in Photoshop. (Estimated time for completion after tutorial: 3+ hours.)
Lesson 5: Value Study
Paul creates a value study of Sam Viviano based on a pencil sketch. (Video duration: 1:47:20)
Assignment 5: Paint a value study of Sam Viviano in Photoshop using the sketch and reference provided. (Estimated time for completion after tutorial: 4+ hours.)
Lesson 6: Illustration and Composition
This lesson covers the structure of an illustration and how it affects the telling of the story. We discuss how the viewers eye can be guided by a good composition. Paul discusses the creation of two of his digital paintings for the Weekly Standard and the Radio Times. (Video duration: 1:28:15)
Assignment 6: Come up with a topical idea for an illustration (can also be a self-caricature). Produce initial thumbnail sketches for your composition. Also start collecting reference to be used and take additional photo reference where needed. (Estimated time for completion after tutorial: 4+ hours.)
Lesson 7: Colour
This lesson looks at various colour palettes and schemes (eg. analogous and split-complementary), as well as discussing the benefits of a limited palette. (Video duration: 1:02:16)
Assignment 7: Paint a 'block-in' version of my painting of Brad Pitt, without the use of the eyedropper tool, trying to match the temperatures and values as closely as possible. Also hand in a 'ready-to-render' sketch for your illustration. (Estimated time for completion after tutorial: 4+ hours.)
Lesson 8: Hair and Clothing
Paul uses a caricature of Julia Roberts to demonstrate rendering hair, showing which brush and opacity settings work best at which stage of the process. (Video duration: 1:17:07)
Assignment 8: Take a photo of yourself or someone else wearing a jacket or shirt with folded arms. Sketch or paint the resulting folds. Also render the hair of either Marilyn Monroe or Robert Pattinson. (Estimated time for completion after tutorial: 4+ hours.)

9 Week Course Without Critiques
How do I watch the videos?
The lessons and critiques will be sent to you (in .mp4 format) for instant download, meaning you can watch them on any device at any time, on or offline. File sizes can vary between 500MB to 3GB.
When do I need to send my assignments? Is there a deadline?
Times and dates for handing in assignments can be agreed on between Paul and individual students.
How do I deliver the assignments?
Assignments can be emailed to email@example.com. If you have a very large file then a file delivery service such as www.wetransfer.com will allow up to 2GB of files to be transfered free of charge.
For scanned sketches, please make sure the resolution is no smaller than 1000 px on it's shorter edge to allow for a more accurate critique.
Can the fees be paid in instalments?
Installments can be arranged, contact Paul for more information on firstname.lastname@example.org. A maximum of three installments can be allowed. All fees are to be cleared before the first lesson.
Do I receive grades on my work?
Paul's course is not affiliated, so grading is not necessary.
Do I need to watch the tutorials in sequence?
Yes. Paul will send you each tutorial in sequence, starting with lesson one. The next lesson will only be sent once your critique for the previous assignment has been viewed.
What do I need before signing up?
Depending on requirements, you will need some or all of the following: pencils, paper, pencil sharpener, putty rubber, PC or MAC with broadband connection, flatbed scanner, Adobe Photoshop
When does my course start?
Your course will start any time you are ready after your fees have been paid. A schedule for lessons and critiques can be agreed with Paul.
Can I get a refund?
For the critiqued course, refunds can be given either within 14 days of payment or before the start of your first critique, whichever comes first. Lessons are delivered weekly. If after starting the course, you change your mind, refunds cannot be issued. However, the remaining lessons can be requested as a complete download.
When signing up for the course without critiques, a full refund can be requested before the files are sent. Once the files are downloaded, refunds cannot be issued.
